[edit] Taxes on Upgrades

Certain countries levy taxes that vary depending on the class of service. When departing from one of these countries and upgrading a flight, AA will collect the tax difference from you (which at times is due even if the upgraded flight is a down-line connection).

[edit] France

France has an Air Passenger Solidarity Tax, code IZ, that increases from EUR10.00 in economy (or premium economy) to EUR40.00 in business or first for transatlantic flights. The difference is, therefore, EUR30.00 (click here for conversion to USD).

This tax does not apply when transiting France within 24 hours.

[edit] United Kingdom

The U.K. has the Air Passenger Duty (APD), code GB, that increases from GBP45.00 in economy to GBP90.00 in a premium class (premium economy, business or first) for transatlantic flights. The difference is, therefore, GBP45.00 (click here for conversion to USD).

N.B. APD, and the difference between economy and premium duties, are scheduled to increase in Nov 2010.

This duty applies even if you are departing the UK in economy and connecting to another flight in a premium class outside the UK (see Section 3.5 of HM Revenue & Customs Air Passenger Duty Notice).

This duty does not apply to passengers who are transiting from an originating flight that is not subject to the duty. International-to-international connections are subject to a maximum 24 hour connection time. The connecting flight must be on the same ticket or flight summary for the tax to be waived. (see Section 4.4 of HM Revenue & Customs Air Passenger Duty Notice)
