[edit] O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is United Airline's largest hub and the second largest hub of competitor American Airlines. Until 2005 it ranked as the busiest airport in the world, and is still second to Atlanta-Hartsfield. [1]

United Airlines (including United Express) is the largest airline at Chicago O'Hare carrying 48.79% of the passengers. American Airlines (including American Eagle) is the second largest carrying 39.89% of passengers. [2]

[edit] Key Information

Map (UA)

[edit] Check-in

Note: passengers checking baggage on flights departing ORD must check in at least 45 minutes prior to departure. Passengers without bags can check in up to 35 minutes prior to departure.

UA check-in with baggage is located in Terminal 1, on the upper (departures) level. Elite/First check-in and Online Bag Drop are located on the left (south) side of the terminal.

Passengers not checking bags can also use the check-in kiosks at Terminal 2 or on the baggage (arrival) level of Terminal 1.

[edit] Flights

  • UA flights at ORD leave out of Terminals 1 and 2. UX flights leave out of Terminals 2 (Concourses E and F) and 1 (Concourse C gates C1-C8).
  • When arriving on an international flight into ORD, you will clear customs and immigration and so must arrive in Terminal 5. If connecting, you'll take a train to Terminal 1 or 2.
  • You can walk between Terminal 1 and 2 with little difficulty both airside and landside.
  • If connecting between Terminal 2 and Concourse B, walk. If between Terminal 2 and Concourse C, take the bus shuttle that transfers pax between gates E3 and C9

[edit] Red Carpet Club

http://www.united.com/page/article/0,1360,50299,00.html

  • B7

This club is closes to the Continental Airlines gates and reportedly has a CO Agent inside upstairs at the main service desk. This was renovated during 2009 with new carpet and seating.

  • B18

This club was renovated in Nov/Dec 2009. The seating was moved down to tarmac level in order to increase the size of the club. This club also has the new espresso/capuccino machines installed. Wireless Internet ("WiFi") is available. The number of mains power outlets was increased, which is appreciated by many business travellers.

  • C18

This is probably the largest RCC at Chicago O'Hare. It has three seating areas, one of which is a designated "Quiet Room". It also has a number of work carrels in its business center. Wireless Internet ("WiFi") is available. Unused/available mains power outlets can be hard to find in this club, especially during peak hours.

  • F3

This is probably the smallest RCC at Chicago O'Hare. It is often quite crowded and does not include a business center or work carrels. As of mid-December 2009, the (old) Espresso/Capuccino machine had been removed. Staff did not have information on when or whether a new (or an old-style) replacement might appear. The range of bottled beers at the bar was broader than at most RCCs, including Guinness.

[edit] Easy Check-in

  • ORD has Easy Check-ins landside in the ticketing area.
  • There are also Easy Check-ins at airside Customer Service Centers:
    • B7
    • B14
    • C18
    • F3
    • F11

[edit] Baggage Claim

All United flights from US and Canada claim bags at Terminal 1 Lower Level, even if they arrive at Terminal 2; all flights from the same origin city are typically assigned to the same carousel. Baggage Services are between Claims 7 and 8.

International Arrivals claim (and if necessary, re-check) bags at Terminal 5.

[edit] Future Ticketing

Located at the Terminal 1 baggage claim level, by the exit closest to claims 1/2.

[edit] Terminal Details

[edit] Terminal 1

All United flights check in at Terminal 1, where it controls all 53 gates in the B and C concourses. This terminal, which replaced the original 1955 international terminal was designed by Helmut Jahn and opened in 1987. United hosts departure by Star Alliance partners Lufthansa to Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich and All Nippon Airways departures to Tokyo-Narita as well as all Continental Airlines (CO) flights. However, CO flights still check-in in their previous location in Terminal 2.

From left to right (south to north) upon entry are:

  • TSA checkpoint 3, convenient to Terminal 2 and generally the faster option for non-elites
  • United.com bag check
  • International First Class/Global Services check-in lobby
  • TSA for Elite/First/Business
  • Elite(Premier and higher)/Domestic First/Business check-in positions.
  • Oversize/Special baggage desk (set back)
  • Economy (general) check-in positions
  • TSA checkpoint 1, for Non-Elite passengers
  • Lufthansa and ANA check-in desk

Concourse B has 21 Gates (B1–B12, B14–B22) and is located immediately past check-in and security. Note that Concourse B has few moving walkways, so connections to lower-numbered B gates can involve long walks.

Concourse C has 32 Gates (C1-C12, C15, C16, C16A, C17, C18, C18A, C19-C32). It is connected to Concourse B and check-in/security by an underground pedestrianway, famous for the neon lights overhead. This pedestrianway also directly connects to baggage claim. Lufthansa and ANA departures are from concourse C.

Red Carpet Clubs are located at B7, B18 and C18 Easy Check-ins are available before security and at gates B7, B14, and C18

[edit] Terminal 2

Terminal 2 was built in 1962 as United's sole terminal, and it is now shared with non-hub North American airlines. Two Star Alliance code-share partners and a future partner check in and claim bags at Terminal 2:

  • Air Canada/Air Canada Jazz to Calgary, Montréal, Toronto-Pearson
  • US Airways/US Airways Express to Charlotte, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Phoenix
  • Continental Airlines/Continental Express to Cleveland, Houston-Intercontinental, Newark

Concourse E has 16 Gates: United uses E3, Air Canada uses E1, E1A, E2, E2A, and USAirways uses E7 and E8.

Concourse F has 14 gates: Most are used by United Express and can handle multiple flights at the same time, effectively bringing aircraft capacity to 26: F1(A-D), F2(B-D), F4(A,B), F5, F6(A,B), F7B, F11(A-E), F12, F12(A-C), F14. US Airways uses Gates F8 and F10.

F Gates with the alpha designation board/disembark passengers through a single doorway. Passengers board/disembark aircraft using airstairs, walking along designated pathways, utilizing stairs/elevators to access the gate area. United Airlines is in the process of converting these "outside operations" gates used by United Express into jet bridge operations to increase passenger comfort and ultimately enhance safety and security.

Additional gates - F5B & F7A - are currently under construction which will increase capacity to 28 aircraft. Construction of these gates are scheduled to finish before summer 2009.

Red Carpet Club is located at F3 Easy Check-ins are available before security and at gates F3 and F11

United Airlines runs a shuttle service between Concourse E and Concourse C. The shuttles are accessed via stairways near Gate E-2A and Gate C-9. Shuttles run every 5-7 minutes between 5:30am and 10:00pm.

[edit] Terminal 3

Terminal 3 provides 77 Gates on 4 Concourses for competing airlines.

American Airlines/American Eagle holds all gates on Concourses G,K,H and L, but hosts some Iberia Departures. Delta Airlines leads Concourse L, shared with Alaska Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and additional American flights.

[edit] Terminal 4

The former temporary Terminal 4, located on the ground floor of the main parking garage, closed in 1993. It now serves as the airport's facility for CTA subway and buses, hotel shuttles, and other ground transportation. The T4 designation is reserved for a proposed terminal between T3 and T5.

[edit] Terminal 5 (International Terminal)

All international flights to O'Hare (United or not) which require customs clearance will arrive at Terminal 5. This terminal also provides 21 shared departure gates for many "foreign flag" airlines on its single concourse. Star Alliance Partners departing Terminal 5 are: Asiana, bmi, LOT, SAS, SWISS, and Turkish Airlines.

United and Air Canada international departures are at Terminals 1 and 2; UA and AC flights from major Canadian cities and other sites with border pre-clearance arrive at T1 and T2.

Transfers to and from other O'Hare terminals must use the Airport Transportation System people mover shuttle; there is no pedestrian route.

[edit] Access to airport

  • Road vehicles enter and exit via Interstate 190, which branches off Interstate 90 (the Kennedy Expressway) leading to downtown Chicago. Cars may also access the airport locally from Mannheim Road, the airport's eastern boundary. Aside from cargo access on its south side, all airport traffic travels through the east side of the airport.
  • Subway trains from the CTA Blue Line depart the terminal to downtown every 5-15 minutes (30 late night). The station can be reached by indoor pedway from the level below baggage claim. Fares are $2.25 one-way. For schedule information visit the CTA website or call 1-888-YOUR-CTA (968-7282).
  • Commuter trains from the Metra North Central Service board at the O'Hare Transfer station, which is connected to the Airport Transit System via a shuttle bus. Fares are $3.80 to Union Station and vary by distance for other locations. Service is very infrequent outside of weekday rush periods. Check Metra's Website or call 1-312-836-7000 for details.
