[edit] Economy Plus
Economy Plus ("E+") is a subset of the seating in the Economy cabin on United and "ExPlus" United Express Flights. These seats - located at the front of the Economy Cabin - have a seat pitch of 34-36 inches, compared to 31-32 inches for regular Economy seating. These are marketed for their greater leg room, but otherwise there is no difference in service from the rest of the Economy cabin. No other US airline offers such differentiation within Economy. Economy Plus is not considered a separate cabin.
E+ seats are designated by signs on the headrest and/or below the door of the overhead bin. In many cases, E+ includes the exit row and all economy seats fore of the exit row.
[edit] Qualification
Economy Plus originated as a benefit for Elite Level members of Mileage Plus, but has expanded.
Those seated in Economy Plus fall into the following categories:
1. Elite Level members of Mileage Plus
2. Guests of Elite Members, on the same flight (one for most levels, seven for 1K)
3. Passengers who have purchased the "Economy Plus Annual Option" for $349
Those in groups 1-3 can select Economy Plus seats at the time of Ticket purchase.
4. Passengers who receive and accept a one-time offer, which can cost $19-$149, depending on flight length. Previously the offer was only available at check-in, and on an occasional basis, but after the inauguration of the "Travel Options by United" program, it is also offered somewhat consistently at time of ticket purchase or at any time prior to flight.
5. Passengers assigned at the discretion of the Gate Agent or Flight Attendant for need, such as those with disabilities, or for weight balance on a commuter plane.
6. If all non-Economy Plus seats in the Economy Cabin are assigned, remaining passengers not qualifying for #1-#4 above will be instructed that they will receive seat assignments at the gate. If no other seats become available, these passengers will be assigned Economy Plus seats by the Gate Agent.
[edit] Exit Rows
Mileage Plus Members who are Global Services, 1K, or Premier Executive can also select Exit Row seats at time of ticket purchase if available. Premier members can request reassignment to the exit row from an United Agent at the airport, if still available.
